A 10-day adventure across Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, blending high-mountain trekking in the Fann Mountains with Silk Road cities, glacier-fed lakes, colourful bazaars and remote villages.

From Soviet boulevards to timeless madrasas, this journey follows ancient routes through wild landscapes and living traditions.

* In hotels, accommodation is in twin/double rooms with private bathrooms. In rural areas, accommodation may be in guesthouses or yurts, with shared rooms/yurts and/or shared bathroom facilities.


Not included

  • Flights: We do not include flights, as departure cities and individual travel plans may vary. We always encourage travelers to extend their journey independently if they wish. However, we are happy to help you find the most convenient flight options.
  • Travel Insurance: Medical insurance is mandatory. We recommend TrueTraveller, ViaggiSicuri, Columbus 
  • Trip Cancellation Insurance (strongly recommended): Some insurance providers, such as IATI and Europassistance, offer combined medical and cancellation coverage.
  • Meals in Bishkek and Karakol: Meals in Central Asia are typically inexpensive and affordable.
  • Airport Transfers: Taxis are easy to book through apps like Yango and Yandex Taxi and are generally very economical.
  • Gratuities: In Central Asia, it is customary to tip guides and drivers. We suggest approximately €40 per person, to be shared between guides and drivers.
  • Anything not specifically mentioned in the “Price Includes” section.

  • Deposit: €300 upon booking confirmation.
  • Final Payment: Due 50 days before departure.

Useful information

  • Passport: Must be valid for at least 6 months upon entry (in some cases, 3 months validity may be accepted).
  • Time Zone: Tashkent, Uzbekistan: GMT +5 (3 hours ahead of Italy during daylight saving time).

Itinerary Highlights

DAY 1 - TASHKENT: Soviet Skylines & First Plov

  • Arrival in Tashkent, hotel check-in and short rest.
  • Walking tour through leafy boulevards, monuments, and striking Soviet modernist architecture.
  • First plov of the trip
  • Afternoon visit to the Parkent Solar Furnace, a unique Soviet engineering relic in the hills outside of Tashkent.
  • Overnight in Tashkent.

DAY 2 - KHUJAND: Bazaar Life & Mountain Roads

  • Morning drive to Khujand across passes and valleys, with scenic stops
  • Walking tour around Timurmalik Fortress and dive into the colours and sounds of Panjshanbe Bazaar.
  • Dinner in a local restaurant, trying Tajik specialities.
  • Overnight in Khujand.

DAY 3 - ISTARAVSHAN: Traditions, Reservoirs & First Mountain Village

  • Transfer to Istaravshan.
  • Visit to the old city of Istaravshan with a 15th-century madrasa and mosque and the old bazaar, meeting traditional knife makers at work.
  • Home-style lunch in a family-run restaurant.
    Stop at Kattasay water reservoir, then continue towards the Iskanderkul region.
  • Arrival in a remote mountain and gold-mining village.
  • Dinner and overnight in Saratog.

DAY 4 - LAKE ISKANDERKUL

  • Morning at Lake Iskanderkul.
  • Short hikes to viewpoints, the nearby waterfall and presidential residence area.
  • Picnic by the lake
  • Afternoon drive to a Mountain Base Camp, with stops in mountain villages and at the mausoleum of Rudaki, father of Persian poetry.
  • Dinner and overnight in a cosy mountain hut in the heart of the Fann Mountains.

DAY 5 - TREK TO KULIKALON & BIBIDZHONAT LAKES: A trek in Heaven

  • Early breakfast and start of the trek.
  • Moderate 3-hour hike to the Kulikalon and Bibidzhonat lakes (2,800 m), with donkeys carrying the main luggage.
  • Picnic lunch at the campsite by the lake
  • Free time to wander around the lakes, meet local shepherds and observe daily life in the high pastures.
  • Dinner with shepherd families and stories over tea.
  • Overnight in tents.

DAY 6 - TREK TO ALAUDDIN LAKES: High Pass & Turquoise Waters

  • Breakfast at the campsite.
  • 5-hour trek over a high mountain pass (3,790 m) with views over snow-capped peaks and deep valleys.
  • Picnic with stunning panoramas and grazing cows around.
  • Descent to the Alauddin Lakes (3,000 m), with time to relax on the shore and, for the brave ones, an optional dip in the icy waters.
  • Dinner by the campfire and board games.
  • Overnight in tents.

DAY 7 - MUTNYE LAKE: At the Foot of Glaciers

  • Breakfast at the Alauddin camp.
  • Full-day hike to Mutnye Lake (3,500 m), nestled below vertical rock walls and glaciers.
  • Picnic at the lakeshore.
  • Afternoon return to Alauddin, with time for short walks, photography and quiet moments by the water.
  • Dinner prepared by our mountain cooks and overnight in the campsite.

DAY 8 - DESCENT TO ZERAFSHAN VALLEY: Tiny and dusty streets

  • Farewell to our sherpas and donkey team; morning descent to the valley.
  • Lunch in a small red-clay village along the Zerafshan River, with a visit to local rug makers.
  • Drive to Panjakent.
  • Walk through Soviet residential districts, exploring mosaics, courtyards and everyday life.
  • Dinner and overnight in Panjakent.

DAY 9 | SAMARKAND: From Ancient Sarazm to Silk Road Splendour

  • Drive to the border with a stop in Sarazm (UNESCO WHS), one of Central Asia’s oldest settlements.
  • Arrival in Samarkand and traditional plov in a family restaurant.
  • Walking tour of Samarkand’s main monuments and traditional mahallas.
  • Overnight in Samarkand.

DAY 10 | BUKHARA: The Gem of the Silk Road

  • Early morning train to Bukhara.
  • Walking tour of the old town and visit to beautiful examples of traditional urban architecture.
  • Lunch and conversation with a local photographer in a historic Bukhara house.
  • Afternoon photo walk through lanes, domes and caravanserais.
  • Farewell dinner.
  • Overnight in Bukhara.
